What's Involved

This is a structured professional formation programme designed to develop you as a confident, reflective and competent educator in the Further Education and Skills sector. You will complete nine core modules, each mapped to the Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) Occupational Standards and supported by structured assignments and practical elements that connect theory directly to your teaching practice. Throughout the programme, you will explore key areas including professionalism and dual professionalism, evidence-based practice, curriculum design and planning, subject specialist pedagogy, classroom management and inclusive learning environments, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, safeguarding responsibilities, initial and diagnostic assessment, effective communication and collaborative working, and the application of learning theories and contemporary pedagogical models.

What's in it for you?

Completing the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills) provides you with a nationally recognised professional qualification that replaces the former Diploma in Education and Training (DET). It is the current standard qualification for teachers working in the Further Education and Skills sector and confirms your professional competence as an educator.

Successful completion of the programme also enables you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, supporting your professional recognition and opening up further teaching opportunities across the sector. This qualification strengthens your professional standing and demonstrates your commitment to high-quality teaching practice.

The diploma supports clear career progression pathways, including opportunities to move into leadership roles, curriculum development, subject specialist or advanced practitioner positions, and progression into higher education. It equips you with the knowledge, confidence and professional credibility needed to advance within education and training settings.

Throughout the course, you will develop contemporary teaching expertise aligned with current sector expectations. You will strengthen your subject-specific pedagogy, enhance your digital competence, build confidence in inclusive practice, deepen your safeguarding knowledge, and develop the ability to apply evidence-based practice effectively in your teaching. This qualification is not just about gaining a certificate; it is about developing your professional identity as a skilled, reflective and confident educator.

What will I learn?

Throughout the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills), you will develop a strong professional identity as a teacher, grounded in dual professionalism and aligned to the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standards. You will explore ethical conduct, professional values and responsibilities, enabling you to work confidently and responsibly within a range of Further Education and Skills settings.

You will gain in-depth knowledge of curriculum and lesson planning, including the use of recognised curriculum design models, the creation of effective schemes of work, and the application of structured lesson planning frameworks. This will support you in designing coherent, purposeful and inclusive learning programmes that meet both learner needs and organisational requirements.

The course develops your understanding of key learning theories and how they inform teaching practice. You will explore constructivist, behaviourist, humanistic, cognitive and social learning theories, and learn how to apply these perspectives to plan engaging sessions, select appropriate teaching strategies and support effective learning.

You will also build strong assessment competence, including the use of initial and diagnostic assessment, formative and summative assessment strategies, and the development of tailored learning plans to support individual learner progress and achievement.

A significant focus is placed on inclusion and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). You will learn how to apply the Equality Act in practice, design inclusive curricula, and develop culturally responsive approaches that promote fairness, accessibility and positive learner experiences.

Safeguarding is embedded throughout the programme, ensuring you understand key principles such as Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), reporting and referral processes, the Prevent duty and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in educational settings.

Finally, you will develop the skills needed to support learners effectively and manage transitions. This includes addressing barriers to learning, planning and supporting learner progression, and working collaboratively with colleagues and support services to ensure learners are appropriately supported throughout their educational journey.
